What We Did
St Mark's Care Centre is class c2, modern, purpose built, 62 bed facility, located in Sale, Greater Manchester.
The Centre is for adults aged 18+ with complex and challenging behaviours, including Mental Illness, Dementia, Early On-set Dementia, Acquired Brain Injury and Stroke.
Split into five distinct areas, St Marks' provides person centred nursing & specialist care to support: patient recovery, those who are difficult to engage in the rehabilitation/recovery process and those who require maintance of their current level of functioning.
Whilst the majority of the construction is traditional in load bearing masonry, there is a structural steel frame to the main entrance, reception and ground floor lobby area, rising through to the second floor. Walls were designed as facing masonry with a mix of brickwork, render and artificial slate. The same slate has also been utilised for the finish on the pitched roofs, reflecting the style of the residential properties in the surrounding area. Window design is double glazed, grey aluminium throughout. There are more expansive elements of glazing within curtain walls to the stairwells and main entrance. As a result of the tight site, a basement area has been constructed using waterproof in-situ concrete. This area accommodates facilities that would normally be found at ground level; a therapy suite, staff amenity areas, together with the main kitchen, plant and laundry areas.
Landscaping to the front elevation has been designed to sit in and around the existing mature trees. The enclosed rear courtyard affords service users and visitors safety and privacy, whilst enjoying the external activities and environment. The Centre's car park forms part of the design and is discreetly positioned out of sight of the courtyard.
