Oak Cottage

Client: Private Client

Location: Cheshire

Value: Undisclosed

Status: Completed 2009.

The scheme consists of a two storey extension to the existing Grade II listed cottage. The original building was constructed in 1601 and the new scheme utilises traditional techniques and materials to provide contemporary living space in a building that sits comfortably with its neighbour. The new building is constructed in green oak on a Cheshire sandstone plinth with rendered panels and oak windows, under a roof finished in oak shingles.

A link corridor constructed in oak and glass physically connects the two buildings creating a pleasant courtyard space, whilst providing a minimal visual link, allowing all stages of the houses’ development to be visible. Eaves and ridge design was carefully considered with the Conservation Officer to ensure that the new building did not visually overpower the existing. In addition the oak framing to the glazed gable was developed with the frame designer to reflect traditional Cheshire details, whilst the contemporary free standing staircase hung from the structure was designed in collaboration with the client.

Traditional construction coupled with a truly collaborative contemporary design approach creates a successful intervention and sensitively allows the existing house to address the garden, thereby enabling the complete scheme to respond to 21st century living.
