St Clares Abbey is a listed mid 19th century Convent in Darlington, originally designed by the well known Victorian ecclesiastical architect, Hansom. Gilling Dod were appointed in 2009 to review future uses for the Abbey for its current owners the Hospitaller Order of St John of God and in the meantime have carried out a number of refurbishment projects including the refurbishment of the gatehouse and entrance areas to create an office suite and associated facilities, refurbishment of the living accommodation and the flat for the Provincial.
The refitting in particular was carried out to a very high quality specification and the internal design was supervised by Gilling Dod’s Interior Design, the brief was to produce a very traditional solution, in keeping with the building’s 19th century heritage.
