Gilling Dod are appointed as the Lead Architects for the £90 Million redevelopment of the New West Cumberland Hospital which will see the biggest single investment into healthcare for West Cumbria in over half a century. It presents an immensely exciting opportunity to create a new healthcare facility to deliver hospital care into the 21st Century. The redevelopment will be delivered via the Procure21 initiative framework with Laing O’Rourke appointed as the PSCP.
The proposals involve a mixture of new build and refurbishment. The new buildings will be up to three storey’s in height with some rooftop plant areas. Construction will be via a prefabricated concrete frame and panel system incorporated within which will be a variety of materials which will give the building a distinctive and exciting aesthetic. The new build accommodation comprises an urgent care centre, radiology department, minor ops facilities, endoscopy department, medical investigations unit, outpatient facilities, acute assessment centre, coronary care unit, intensive care unit, 6 theatre operating suite, neo natal, pediatric out-patient and in-patient facility, special care bay unit, delivery suite, wards, canteen, café and main entrance area.
The exciting design brings public and patient flows to the forefront and the introduction of open spaces alongside areas of circulation provides a sense of place at all times. The construction is due to commence in 2011 with completion set for early 2014.
