New Modular Extension and Refurbishment of Critical Care Unit
Client: The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery NHS Trust
Location: Fazakerley, LiverpoolValue: £900,000 + £1.1 Million
Status: Completed 2010
Gilling Dod was awarded the contract to design a new three story modular extension for the Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool part of the UK’s only standalone neurosciences hospital for neurological patients. The new building is located in a courtyard and surrounded on three sides by out-patients clinics, wards and the critical care unit. Due to the limited space available and to minimise noise, vibration and other construction disturbance it was decided to specify a modular office construction system that was to match the existing building.
The new building provides changing accommodation, training rooms, meeting rooms and offices and released space within the existing critical care unit to enable eight additional HDU/ITU beds to be provided. The £1.1 Million critical care unit contract ran concurrently with the modular building requiring close cooperation between the two contractors. Despite significant challenges due to the tight location, restricted access and the close proximity of live patient areas the works were completed on time.
