What We Did

Gilling Dod Architects were commissioned to design a new Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit built under the Procure21 framework for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust. The new project provides new services for Lincolnshire which had previously been outsourced to other areas.

The project is a flagship development for mental health rehabilitation, encouraging a homely, domestic environment which is cognitive for the user’s therapy and rehabilitation, but still being flexible and functional for its needs. Discovery House also includes cooking facilities, a cafe where patients can volunteer to help their transition back to the workplace, therapy rooms, a gym which is also used by the local community and administration space. The ultimate endeavour of the project was to deliver high quality individualized care to the patients in a safe, secure and therapeutic environment that sits within the community.

Patients Choice Awards.

Discovery House won 3 of it's 4 shortlisted categories for Best Patient experience, Best Project team and Patients Choice Awards. We scooped the converted Patient Choice Award from over 220 submission, the judges were particularly pleased with the amount of stakeholder engagement carried out during the design process, which has helped to address and overcome the stigma often associated with mental health problems. The onsite café is now being run by a community-based social enterprise, with many members of its staff suffering from mental health conditions themselves. The attention paid to the interior design and landscaping at the unit also helped to make judge’s decision.
