We designed the interiors in several of the departments that this building accommodates, all of which had a ‘ seaside’ theme.

The design of the Children’s clinic gave us the opportunity to be adventurous, exploring the sensory aspects of designing, which created a relaxed non clinical environment for the patients and visitors. The reception desk was designed in the form of a Pirates Ship, incorporating intricate details such as the portholes, ships wheel and mast. The layout of the flooring pattern created flows guiding visitors to the relevant desks, whilst including cartoon sea life characters to gain the attention of the young patients, including fish, octopus, turtles and starfish. Two indoor play areas were also a large part of the scheme so that children could attend the clinic and have a little fun before their appointments. Feedback from the Paediatric Consultant is that attending patients who would previously have become frustrated and impatient with any delays, were all entering clinic in a relaxed and joyous frame of mind.

A glass artist (Sarah Galloway) was commissioned to design several pieces around the hospital. These have enhanced the spaces as they add colour, depth and there is a real richness in the content of the work which gives them a high quality feel.

The main reception area is light, bright and airy with splashes of bold colour to help denote key areas such as the desk and entrances to departments. This accompanied with minimal signage has been very effective in making the interiors welcoming and contemporary. The central roof light ensures natural light is plentiful during the day. Furthermore, there is attractive LED lighting to the perimeter of the roof light which changes colour becoming the focal point of the space.
